Halloween Plumbing Horror Stories (And How to Avoid Becoming One)

Every October we brace for the same thing: a wave of clogged drains and backed-up toilets from houses that just had a Halloween party, a costume-building afternoon, or one too many trick-or-treaters running through the bathroom. The costume that clogged the sink

Fake blood, face paint, hair gel, and costume pieces that shed glitter and fabric fibers — it all seems harmless going down the bathroom sink after trick-or-treating. In reality, thick costume makeup and "blood" (often corn syrup or oil-based) coats the inside of pipes just like grease does, and glitter and small fabric scraps catch on that coating instead of washing through. Wipe makeup off with a cloth or paper towel first, and let kids rinse hands and faces over a sink with the stopper out and cold water running — cold water keeps grease-like residue from melting and sticking to pipe walls.

The slime and "eyeball" punch bowl disaster

Halloween party food and drink has a lot of stuff that should never meet a garbage disposal or a toilet: slime and putty leftover from a craft table, gelatin "eyeballs," candy wrappers someone flushed as a joke, and the grease from a big batch of fried Halloween treats. Slime and gelatin-based decorations are especially bad — they're designed to be gooey and cohesive, which is exactly the texture that binds with hair and other debris to form a clog deep in your line. The pumpkin-guts garbage disposal jam

Pumpkin carving produces a lot of stringy pulp and seeds, and it's tempting to just scrape the guts straight into the sink. Pumpkin pulp is fibrous and expands with water, which is a bad combination for a garbage disposal — it wraps around the blades instead of getting cut up, and can jam the motor or work its way into the trap. Bag the pulp and seeds for the trash (or compost) and only run small amounts of any solid waste through the disposal with plenty of cold water.

The decoration that ended up in the toilet

Fake spiderwebs, small plastic skeletons, glow sticks, and other decorations have a way of ending up somewhere they shouldn't — usually because a curious kid or a party guest treated the toilet like a trash can. Unlike a soft clog from grease or hair, a solid object lodged in a toilet trap usually won't clear with a plunger and can crack the porcelain if someone tries to force it. If something solid goes in and won't flush through, stop flushing and call us rather than repeatedly trying — repeated flushing risks an overflow on top of the clog.
